By truck, that morning Frederik took twenty kilometers away from Makale bring three tedongs. One of them is tedong bonga or albino (striped) buffalo. He expects a fortunes of the ongoing bull market in Bolu Traditional Market, Rantepao, North Toraja. Frederik was not alone. Dozens buffalo sellers gathered in the same place, the biggest buffalo market in Indonesia.
The sun was directly overhead but only a few prospective buyers were trying to close. Although somewhat overcast, sweltering afternoon was enough to test the patience. Heavy sweat tease Frederik to leave the arena immediately. Finally one of his buffalo sold for fifty million rupiah. But he’s still unhappy since his bonga haven’t sold yet. Although not so handsome, it’s still a bonga instead of common buffalo. Three hundred million is minimum price he expected. Mean while he got news, todays sales record was obtained by his fellow from Makale. Nine hundred and fifty million rupiah. Frederik has give up. Soon he ordered his men to put the remaining two buffalos into the truck.
Buffalo is one of major part of life of the Toraja society especially when Rambu Solo season arrives. At that time the demand of buffalo will rise dramatically. Buffalo used as offerings at those luxurious and expensive funeral. Buffalo is believed as a creature which will bring the spirits to heaven. Moreover the horns are also used as a symbol of social status in Toraja. Just look at the front of Tongkonan traditional houses. Physically bigger and more gallant also take a part to jack up the toraja buffalos prices.
Finally Frederik decided to return to Makale. Tomorrow he would try again his luck. Not here but other areas turn buffalo market. Although the distance is far enough, a smile still spread over Frederik’s lips. He believes his fortune will be better . As long as the culture and traditions firmly held by the Torajans, Frederik would not worry about his living.

Pagi itu Frederik menempuh dua puluh kilometer dari Makale membawa sebuah truk berisi tiga ekor tedong. Salah satunya adalah tedong bonga atau kerbau bule (belang). Ia mengharapkan peruntungan dari pasar kerbau yang sedang berlangsung di Pasar Bolu, Rantepao, Toraja Utara. Frederik tak sendirian. Puluhan orang penjual kerbau berkumpul di tempat yang sama, ajang jual beli kerbau terbesar di Indonesia. Beberapa penjual bahkan berasal dari luar Toraja.
Matahari sudah di atas kepala tapi hanya beberapa calon pembeli saja yang mencoba mendekat. Walaupun agak mendung, terik siang itu cukup menguji kesabaran. Peluh yang makin deras menggodanya untuk segera pergi. Akhirnya salah satu kerbaunya laku seharga lima puluh juta rupiah. Namun pria paruh baya ini masih belum puas. Bonga nya belum laku. Walaupun tidak terlalu tampan, tetap saja itu seekor bonga, bukan kerbau biasa. Tiga ratus juta adalah harga minimal yang ia harapkan. Sementara itu Frederik mendapat kabar penjualan termahal hari itu didapat oleh sesama penjual kerbau dari Makale. Sembilan ratus lima puluh juta rupiah. Frederik menyerah. Tak lama ia pun menyuruh anak buahnya memasukkan lagi sisa dua tedongnya ke dalam truk.
Kerbau adalah salah satu bagian utama dari kehidupan suku Toraja, apalagi kalau musim Rambu Solo tiba. Di saat itu jumlah permintaan kerbau akan melonjak drastis. Kerbau dijadikan persembahan pada acara pemakaman mewah nan mahal itu karena dipercaya sebagai makhluk yang akan membawa arwah orang yang meninggal ke langit. Selain itu tanduknya juga dijadikan simbol status sosial masyarakat Toraja. Tengok saja bagian depan rumah-rumah adat Tongkonan. Fisik yang cenderung lebih besar dan gagah dibanding kerbau daerah lain ikut mendongkrak harga kerbau Toraja.
Tak lama kemudian Frederik memutuskan untuk kembali ke Makale. Besok ia akan mencoba kembali peruntungannya. Bukan kesini tapi daerah lain yang mendapat giliran pasar kerbau. Walaupun jarak yang ditempuh cukup jauh, senyum masih mengembang di bibir Frederik. Ia percaya nasibnya akan membaik. Selama tradisi dan budaya dipegang teguh oleh orang Toraja, Frederik tak khawatir akan kelangsungan hidupnya.
